When you choose to give birth at our birth center, you’re choosing an environment of safety and community.
Tempe Birth Center’s comprehensive birthing space offers support and autonomy to have the birth you want.

Your Labor
You decide how involved we are during your labor.
Monitoring the well-being of you and your baby is our job, but if you prefer to labor alone with your partner, we respect that choice. With minimal disturbance, we come in to check heart tones and vital signs, and leave you alone between checks.
We believe in encouraging laboring people to move in whatever way feels most comfortable. You are in control of your body.
We can offer suggestions for different positions, such as laboring on a birth stool or on our birth center birth tub. A birth tub or shower offers the experience of water, which can bring great comfort during labor. You can walk around or go outside. We have private grounds for outdoor moments.
If you prefer not to have us highly involved in your labor, we highly recommend a doula to provide comfort and support throughout.
The Birth
When it is time to deliver, you are free to choose your position.
You can watch the process and touch the head, and after birth, your baby will immediately be placed on your stomach.
If the baby needs special attention, we can typically tend to their needs right beside you.
On-site, we have emergency equipment such as oxygen. Our team includes fully trained midwives skilled in resuscitation techniques, though we rarely need to use these tools and skills at our center.
In-Practice Care
Prenatal Care
Prenatal checkups are vital to you and your baby’s health.
We schedule 45-minute appointments for each visit. To provide the best possible care, we take time to answer your questions thoroughly and learn about your life and pregnancy.
First Prenatal Visit. This is our longest prenatal session together. Your midwifery team will take a complete medical history and brief physical exam to evaluate your general well-being.
We may draw some blood for complete prenatal lab work.
All Visits. At every prenatal visit, we will review your current status, answer your questions, and provide insight into your and your baby’s progress! We take blood pressure and measure your uterus to help evaluate your baby's growth. This process also helps confirm your estimated due date (EDD)!
The most essential part of your prenatal visits is hearing how you’re feeling.
Your Postpartum Period
Your postpartum care begins the moment you give birth.
You and your baby’s vitals are closely monitored for the first few hours, and one of us will visit you at home within the first few days.
During these first few days, we also complete and submit the birth certificate and Social Security number to the Arizona Office of Vital Records.
After birth, we schedule the one-week visit at our office. Your baby will receive a hearing screen and, if you choose, the second newborn screen. The second newborn screen tests for several treatable conditions that babies are occasionally born with.
You may also choose to have your baby seen by your pediatrician or family practitioner in the early weeks.
Your three- and six-week postpartum visits are also held in our office. At your last visit, you’ll receive your final exam, and we can discuss family planning. If you choose, you’re welcome back for a gynecological exam.
