The Hummingbird Midwives
Meet
Kate Paxton, CNM, CPM, Owner, Clinical Director
Kate loves to support families through conception, pregnancy, birth and beyond. She feels strongly that everyone should have access to appropriate, individualized healthcare and reproductive justice. She has a special interest in helping people access self-supported solutions to health concerns. She had her own midwife-supported homebirth in 2020 and enjoys sharing birth and mothering experiences. The cornerstones of the midwifery model of care - informed decision-making and consent - lie at the heart of her care.
Training
Kate considers all her work, from nannying to doula work in New Orleans and witnessing her mother naturally give birth, formative in her midwifery training.
Academically, Kate attended Columbia University’s Nurse-Midwifery Program in New York, graduating in 2010 and began practicing in 2011.
She is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Licensed in Arizona, and Board-Certified in Nurse-Midwifery.
She worked in a hospital-based group midwifery practice in Arizona for several years, honing her skills with a team of CNMs and Obstetricians - doing everything from prenatal care and catching babies to first-assisting in Cesarean surgical birth.
Her next practice was an in-hospital “birth center” in Louisiana. The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum asked her to curate an exhibit on Midwifery in Louisiana, and you can visit it next time you’re in the French Quarter.
She finally reached her goal of working out of a hospital in a freestanding birth center in Arizona in 2018 and obtained her second midwifery certification as a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife).
Her sweet midwife colleagues supported her during the simple homebirth of her child, which became an important experiential lesson in birth and mothering.
Approach
Kate’s personal midwifery craft combines careful listening with attentive assessment, study of evidence-based care, and experiential wisdom. She loves practicing midwifery, especially at a sustainable, calm pace! She’s committed to providing affirming care that celebrates people of all different backgrounds - be that ethnicity, race, gender, faith, body size, trauma background, or substance history - you will receive non-judgmental, kind, attentive care in her office.
She loves to help people accomplish their goals by working in a collaborative space - whether that’s planning for motherhood, waterbirth, sobriety, getting anxiety under control, or just maintaining health. She feels that you carry the expertise in your body, and she brings her clinical education and experience. She looks forward to getting to know you, to supporting you along on your life journey towards flourishing health.
Hanifah Muhammad, NMD
Greetings Family!
I am Hanifah! I am a daughter, sister, mother, wife & widow, auntie, doctor, herbalist, acupuncturist, educator, and community advocate.
I am originally from New Jersey, but moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 2005 to pursue an education in Naturopathic Medicine. That’s when I began my journey to becoming a doctor, midwife, and community healer.
And oooooo weeeeee, has it been a whopper of a journey.
I am a “Community Baby.” This means I am my mother's only child, brought up by a circle of elder women and men who colored my character with a love of cooking, gardening, building/construction, ALL types of music, art, knitting, sewing, card playing, and traveling. They also taught me spirituality, self-sufficiency, resiliency, community responsibility, and hard work.
Yep, I know that’s a lot, and it has made me a beautiful mosaic of a woman.
My Passion for Birth
My passion began when I was a young girl. In the images of old female slaves, “the mammy’s” and “big mamas, “ I saw these women, who were always called upon when the slave women or “Massa’s” wives were in labor. I understood they carried the knowledge, skill, strength, and power to ensure the safe passage of a new life and new momma into loving space.
These women were the holders of light and life in a very unsafe and hostile environment. Yet these women carried the knowledge of food and herbs. They sang songs, stirred large pots of stew and special tea, or sat humming prayer and knitting a stitch, patiently awaiting the laboring mother, encouraging her and comforting her like no one else had been able to.
These women were my first archetypes of a midwife. By age 6 or 7, I knew that I wanted to be a doctor who delivered babies.
My Educational Path
I bring a lot of learned and lived experience in birth, life, and death, as well as healing, strength, and joy. I pursued degrees in Psychology and Public Health before studying Naturopathic medicine and Chinese medicine.
In between it all, I got married, had babies, started a business, and immersed myself in community advocacy work centered around health disparities, reproductive justice, food equity, mental health wellness, and homelessness.
I also traveled to parts of Africa and Haiti, where I was always placed with midwives and maribous (traditional spiritual healers) to assist, learn, and experience. I can tell you delivering babies by candlelight sheds a beautiful light on the situation.
My Role In Birthwork
My role in birth work, in the most mundane of senses, is to be a witness and assistant to catch the baby.
And in the most magical view, I take a journey with families. I use my hands, my head, my heart, and spirit to create and ensure a safe space for moms, dads, and families, where you can birth your new life into safety and love, on your own terms.
I ensure that the new lives entering into this world, and the resulting families, are welcomed and held with love, respect, honor, and majesty.
It is an honored place to sit...right at the feet of our great mothers, waiting patiently at the door to life on this earth with a smile and good greeting for the new soul coming to join us. I was raised to believe that every child is an answer to a prayer. I am here to make sure those prayers are born into existence with gentle, loving care and gratitude.
What Else?
In my free time, between doctor-mom’ing and supporting birthing families, I enjoy singing, dancing, poetry, photography, and all forms of hands-on art.
I also love cooking & eating great food, enjoying great movies, traveling to new places, spending time in nature...parks, mountains, lakes, backyards (whatever you got, I love it). I sew, knit, or read. Most of all, I love gathering with friends and family to laugh and spend time together.
My passion has always been to assist God in His work of healing and supporting life, light, and love through all of its cycles. I look forward to joining you and supporting you through this beautiful journey! Let’s go! Peace and Blessings.
